IMPACT Assistant Director

Project Description

Bushwick IMPACT (Informing More Parents Across the Community Together) is an exciting new family resource center in Brooklyn.  Our welcoming storefront helps parents and caretakers of children under eight to access resources and opportunities related to child care, education, special needs and enrichment. 

IMPACT strives for all children to surpass their human potential.  We move closer to this vision every day by building parent leadership, providing family support and promoting family literacy. The organization is staffed largely by Parent Advocates, trained community residents who offer quality outreach, referrals and parent-to-parent peer support.

IMPACT is a project of Agenda for Children Tomorrow (ACT), a 17 year-old public/private initiative that works to build neighborhood coalitions that improve access and quality of service delivery systems for families.

Job Description

The Assistant Director is responsible for daily coordination and operation of the IMPACT project.  S/He will supervise staff to ensure that parent/child activities, information, referrals, case management and other program components are implemented according to the highest standards.

The Assistant Director reports to the Project Director, who works in concert with a coalition of community partners to meet project objectives. 
The Assistant Director will:

  • Standardize office procedures, protocols and documentation practices
  • Identify and coordinate professional development opportunities for staff
  • Provide ongoing staff training and supervision
  • Oversee intake and informal case management practices
  • Provide guidance to parent/client meetings
  • Provide informal counseling, support and crisis intervention to families 
  • Write case studies for the purposes of reports and city wide policy meetings
  • Work closely with the Director to track and monitor all project efforts for the purposes of evaluation and continuous improvement. 
  • Interface with community organizations, early childhood program, schools and others to enhance existing partnerships.

The Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate will be resourceful and have the ability to take initiative, inspire consistent team work, maintain good communication and lead effectively and fairly. S/he will be collegial, energetic, friendly and skilled in peer support strategies. S/he will have a commitment to community empowerment.   We seek candidates who are inspired to think outside the box.

Qualifications and Skills

  • MSW, LMSW, LCSW, or MA in Early Childhood Development, Education or Psychology, with work experience.  May consider Bachelor’s with experience.
  • Knowledge of parenting, child development, education and/or child care
  • Familiarity with public systems, services and city agencies such as ACS, DYCD, DOE and DOHMH, particularly as they relate to schools, child care, after school programs, early intervention and other special needs services
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in counseling and peer support strategies
  • Training experience is desirable
  • Ability to interact well with parents, service providers and others
  • Good writing skills
  • Computer and database skills
  • Residency and/or knowledge of  Bushwick preferred
  • Bilingual speaking skills in Spanish and English is a must.

Salary range is from the mid 40s to low 50s, based on qualifications, with an excellent benefits package.

Student Intern- Early Literacy

Program seeking student intern to work in a non-profit Family Resource Center in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Intern will develop a family literacy curriculum and execute biweekly read aloud events for children ages two to five, as well as monthly family reading events at local public libraries. Ability to design age appropriate activities, select age appropriate books, and work with young children and their parents a must. Seeking a candidate who is mature, flexible, open-minded, has good follow-through, works well with others and takes initiative. This is an excellent opportunity for a student in the field of early education, child development or teaching. Bilingual Spanish strongly preferred. Approximately 10 hours weekly.

Spanish Speaking Intern

Seeking student intern to work in a non-profit family information and resource center in the Bushwick community of Brooklyn.  Intern will work directly with parents of young children, making referrals to community resources and services, and providing information that helps families navigate city systems.  Seeking a candidate who is mature, flexible, open-minded, has good follow-through, works well with others and takes initiative. This is an excellent opportunity for a student in the field of child development, public policy, urban planning, community development, social work or education.  Spanish bilingual a must. Approximately 15 hours a week requested.

Student Intern

Seeking student intern to help develop and implement a parent’s speaker’s bureau to impact child care policy. The speaker’s bureau is a pilot project of a non-profit family information and resource center in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  Student will work with a team of collaborating organizations, with parent advocates, coordinate trainings and logistics, and attend city wide policy hearings and meetings. This is an excellent opportunity for a student passionate about child care issues and progressive social change. Student should also be well-organized, work well with others, and follow-through effectively.  Bilingual Spanish preferred. Relevant fields include public policy, child development, community development, social work, education. Approximately 10 hours weekly.
