This past year, as part of their Children First efforts to
improve performance in NYC schools, the Department of Education
created 1,200 Parent Coordinator positions charged with increasing
parent involvement in each of the 1200 public schools. Prior
to beginning the 2003 school year, these Parent Coordinators
participated in intensive training sessions to prepare them
for their brand new role.
The Department of Education asked ACT to develop a curriculum
for the Parent Coordinator’s called “Measures
of Success.” This curriculum assists new Parent Coordinators
in evaluating their progress and effectiveness in engaging
parents. ACT trained Parent Coordinators about the power of
observation, how to use tools such as stories to engage a
group, how to create a survey and how to conduct focus groups
with parents.
Here you will find the “tool kit” and other relevant
information provided to all Parent Coordinators, as well as
stories ACT told as examples of ways to engage an audience.
